Prompt Engineering for Business: A Practical Guide
Prompt engineering sounds technical, but at heart it is simply writing clear instructions so an AI does what you want. For a business deploying an AI agent, the prompt is the training — it defines personality, rules and judgment.
What a good business prompt defines
- Personality & tone — formal or friendly, which languages (Hindi, English, Hinglish).
- What it may and may not say — never quote a price it isn't sure of, never make promises outside policy.
- When to escalate — the exact triggers to hand over to a human.
- How to use your data — answer from the documents provided (RAG), not from memory.
Principles that actually work
Be specific, not vague. Give examples of good answers. State the format you want. List the "never do" rules explicitly — models follow clear prohibitions well. And test with real customer messages, including messy, Hinglish ones, before going live.
The business payoff
Good prompting is the cheapest, fastest way to make AI fit your business — usually before any expensive fine-tuning is needed. It is what makes one company's AI sound on-brand and safe while another's rambles.
