How AI Tool Calling Works (and Why It Turns Chatbots Into Agents)
Tool calling (also called function calling) is the quiet piece of technology that turns a chatbot that only talks into an AI agent that acts. Here's how it works.
The idea
On its own, a language model can only produce text. Tool calling gives it a menu of real actions it may trigger — "look up order by ID", "check calendar availability", "send WhatsApp", "create ticket". When the conversation needs one, the model calls that tool, gets the real result, and continues the conversation with it.
A simple walkthrough
Customer: "Where's my order 4521?" → the model recognises it needs live data → it calls your "get order status" tool with 4521 → your system returns "out for delivery, arriving today" → the model tells the customer, in their language. The AI didn't guess; it fetched the truth via an API.
Doing it safely
Each tool has defined inputs and limits, so the agent can only do what you allow. Sensitive actions can require confirmation or a human. This is how agents stay useful without being risky.
