Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech: How Voice AI Really Works
Every AI voice bot runs on two technologies working in a loop. Understand them and you understand how a machine can hold a phone conversation.
The voice-AI loop
- Speech-to-Text (STT) — the caller speaks; the system turns their audio into written words.
- The AI understands and decides — using NLP and, if needed, tool calls, it works out what to do.
- Text-to-Speech (TTS) — the reply is turned back into natural spoken audio and played to the caller.
This loop repeats every turn, fast enough to feel like a real conversation.
Why quality matters so much
If STT mishears, everything downstream fails. If TTS sounds robotic, callers lose trust. Modern neural TTS sounds genuinely human — with pauses and intonation — which is what lets a voice bot feel like a person rather than an old-style IVR menu.
The Indian reality
Generic global STT often struggles with Indian accents and Hinglish. Voice AI built for India handles both — the single biggest reason cheap demos fall apart on real calls. More on that in How AI understands Hindi and Hinglish.
